What Is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is the burning of the herb, mugwort (Artemisia Vulgaris) for therapeutic purposes.

Moxibustion, or moxa for short, improves blood circulation and regulates components of blood. It penetrates into the body to restore healthy tissue. Traditionally the herb was chosen for its healing properties and specific characteristics:

  • Affects immune function by regulating white blood cells.
  • Anti-biotic, anti-viral and anti-parasitic properties.
  • Pleasant, relaxing and strong sage-like fragrance.

  • khimages

In the West, moxibustion is relatively unknown compared to acupuncture. However, classically and clinically, the two are used together. In fact, in the Chinese characters, acupuncture and moxibustion are written in tandem.
